Qualified electronic signature (QES) in Luxembourg
The one eIDAS level with the same legal effect as a handwritten signature in every EU member state. Sign with the qualified certificate held on your eID smartcard — the private key never leaves the card.
What a qualified signature is
A qualified electronic signature is the highest assurance level defined by Regulation (EU) No 910/2014 (eIDAS). It is created with a qualified certificate held on a secure device — a smartcard or another qualified signature creation device — and is uniquely linked to the signatory, so any later change to the document is detectable.
The three eIDAS levels
- Simple (SES)
- Drawing, typing or uploading a signature. Legally admissible across the EU under eIDAS Article 25.
- Advanced (AES)
- Uniquely linked to the signatory, created with data under their sole control, and able to detect any later change.
- Qualified (QES)
- An advanced signature made with a qualified certificate on a secure device. Article 25(2): the same legal effect as a handwritten signature.

A word on what we claim
Your signature reaches the qualified level when the certificate on your card is itself qualified and its issuer appears on the EU Trusted List. Otherwise it is an advanced signature. LuxSign checks the certificate against the Trusted List and records the level actually achieved; it does not issue qualified certificates and is not a qualified validation service.
